In September 2023, Amnesty International’s Crisis Response Programme hosted the fourth edition of the Digital Verification Corps Summit in Berlin, Germany, in close collaboration with the Hertie School of Governance.
Amnesty International has documented how the Iranian authorities’ relentless onslaught against weekly protests by thousands of protesters and worshippers from Iran’s Zahedan, Sistan and Baluchistan province, escalated on Friday 20 October 2023, as security forces resorted to severe beatings and unnecessary use of tear gas and water cannons, and carried out mass arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearance, and torture and other ill-treatment.
Amnesty International’s Crisis Response Programme gathered compelling evidence documenting the use of white phosphorus artillery shells by the Israeli army in densely populated civilian areas in Gaza, many of which may be considered unlawful indiscriminate attacks.
Berlin-based university Hertie School is the newest member of the Amnesty International Digital Verification Corps (DVC) – a network of universities that collaborate with Amnesty International in ground-breaking and rigorous human rights research.
As Amnesty International’s Archivist, I was delighted to be asked by the Crisis Evidence Lab to discuss the impact of vicarious trauma from an archive and recordkeeping perspective. Our archive holds the collective institutional memory of the Amnesty International – International Secretariat (AIIS), dating back to the organization’s foundation in 1961. The collection includes records related to the development of the organization, six decades of campaigns against human rights violations, and sensitive information on thousands of human rights defenders.
